To minimise stopping distances, the new Atego's full air brake system features ABS as standard. With a constant-pressure systems operating at 10 bar, the brakes respond faster, leaving more valuable time for the actual braking process. Even after the brakes are used repeatedly in quick succession, there is no fade or delayed response.
On road models of the new Atego are fitted with a high power internally ventilated disc braking system as standard. Standard equipment also includes electronic braking with acceleration skid control and hill holder, all leading to a high level of braking efficiency – with outstanding performance and low running costs.
Off road models have disc brakes at the front with drums on the rear, or drum brakes on all axles to safely bring the vehicle to a halt however difficult conditions get.
Standard across all new Atego models of 9.0t and above, the engine brake is a double-synchronised decompression type to provide wear-free retardation and helps to improve safety whilst reducing running costs. This is available to the driver controlled by the steering column stalk to give full control of the braking power as required.
On 4-cylinder engines, the braking power can be as much as 145kW, whilst 6-cylinder engines provide up to 235kW of retardation as standard.
For more braking power, a high performance engine brake can be specified, offering up to 170 kW of braking power on 4-cylinder and 300kW on 6-cylinder engines, with no additional weight.
The new Atego’s permanent magnet retarder is a wear-free auxiliary brake providing a braking torque of 650 Nm, corresponding to an additional braking power of up to 160 kW (at 80 km/h), depending on vehicle and version. As a result, it is possible to reduce use of the service brake by between 50% and 80%, depending on the topographical conditions.
When switched on, either via the column stalk or the brake pedal, magnetic flux flows through the rotor of the retarder. This produces a braking force that acts on the propshaft of the vehicle. When switched off, the rotor of the retarder rotates freely and does not brake the vehicle. This offers reduced maintenance and a safer drive.
