Fast shift times come as standard, but the features that make Mercedes PowerShift 3 the automatic choice include a manoeuvring mode, automatic holding of gears downhill, rocking mode to free a stuck truck, EcoRoll to save fuel when heading downhill, and the choice of switching between three normal driving modes on every truck – even on the move.
The standard mode offers sparkling economy in on-road applications and between sites, Manual mode is always there to give complete control in extreme conditions. In addition, there is either Power mode or Off-Road mode, giving the extra push needed off road or in tough situations. The choice is yours, to suit your application.
Available as 8-, 12- or 16-speed versions, the Mercedes PowerShift 3 Transmission is operated simply with the right hand column stalk. Depending on specification, the gearboxes are available in a wide range of Direct Drive and Overdrive configurations, making it easy to select an Arocs that offers outstanding Efficiency combined with the Power you need.
Although Mercedes PowerShift 3 automated transmissions are fitted as standard to all Arocs, there are a range of 9- and 16-speed manual gearboxes available. For operators that prefer a manual shift, they are tuned to provide virtually loss-free power transmission as well as very smooth gear changing, with pneumatic assistance on all models.
The Turbo Retarder Clutch provides wear free starting and braking under extreme loads. Combining the benefits of a hydrodynamic clutch and a primary retarder in a single component, it makes it possible to move away with maximum control, minimum fuel consumption and no wear – and all of this with full torque and no time limitations.
The integral, high-performance primary retarder with braking power of up to 750 kW (1006hp), which also functions in reverse gear, reduction of some 80 kg in weight compared to a conventional torque converter clutch and the reduced noise emissions are further benefits. The reduction in wear to the braking system reduces downtime and servicing costs, as well as improving cycle times and increasing safety at weights up to 250 tonnes.

The Turbo Retarder Clutch is available in a variety of vehicle types, including tipper and rigid chassis as well as tractor units with engines from 315 kW (420hp) to 460 kW (625hp). It is also used in the Actros and Arocs SLT models, with an additional cooling package behind the cab although the benefits are also seen at much lower weights as well.
